PROJECT 2: KAJANG ART CENTRE

 

For the final project of the semester, we were required to a Kajang Art Centre. We were to individually interpret the idea of ‘Art Centre’ and come up with architectural strategy for the same. This will be in-reflection to the issues and inspirations found in the Project 1 in order to offer to character, continuity and enclose, quality of public realm, ease of movement, legibility, adaptability and diversity in the city.

Apart from developing a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the relevant questions pertaining to community and its context, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for an Art Centre. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.

Concept: Reconcile

The social segregation and in Kajang leads to the need of reconciliation. This Art Centre aims to reconcile three user groups (the old, working adults, and students) ; and the lost traditional activities and contemporary activities covertly by prolonging interaction to a regular basis.  As part of the design strategies, the existing stopping points in the microsite and existing interaction cultures are enhanced to reconcile and encourage interaction between user groups naturally. Spatial layout of the art centre is designed in response to the interaction intensity within the microsite. Kinesthetic programmes are formulated to be operated in a regular basis by the local community to allow users to build relationships and memories as the programmes in the art centre become a routine in their lives. In general, the art centre aims to reconcile user groups, traditional and contemporary activities through knowledge sharing by creating a learning experience tied closely to the past essence of Kajang ; communal and slow-paced life).
