GAZEBO

In group of 4, we were required to design 2 gazebos, 1 for active zone and 1 for passive zone, that will be located within the 27 hectares Taman Tugu. The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. This assignment is also The Taman Tugu Negara Project, a design competition held by LAM.

Concept: The Rhinocerous Hornbill

The bird that symbolises transfer of power.

Active Gazebo (The Soaring Gazebo):

This gazebo is designed to open and welcoming its occupants as they can place their bicycles or a break from activities to admire their natural surroundings with a touch of patriotism. Its double roof features mimics the beak and the casque of the hornbill looking on with pride. Its skeletal body and vertical rods add to its hollowness, making it more light and floating. Its overhead wings hover over its users, as you travel up its "spine", the users will feel slightly compressed and then relieved as they reach the top landing overlooking the horizon, like how the suppressed people achieved freedom at last.

The Souring Gazebo

Passive Gazebo (The Perching Gazebo):

Perch means a resting place of a bird. in this context, this gazebo is a secured enclosed place for privacy of the occupants to take a step back and reflect on one’s life.  its form even takes after how the bird is oriented when perched. it follows the dynamic curves and arches, sprouting from within the central area, safely secured to the ground. like the soaring gazebo, it also features double roofing, which functions to transport falling rainwater from its roof to the ground. its ‘tail’ rest on the ground, its form a facility for the users to park their bikes, increasing space utility.
